Interesting question... that I don't have an answer to.
Perhaps I can wax philosophical.

I found Jon's project when I originally started attempting to put a real
estate site together for the current http://www.flaghometeam.com . After
reading the first chapter of PHP and MySQL Web Development, I realized
there was no way I was going to write this myself. I was able to
find something under the GPL that (mostly) fit my needs. Although not
required, I feel that contributing my changes whether to the original
project-which is much changed- or as a fork like here, is my payment to
Jon and other developers. If it were not for the continued efforts of
developers like Jon and the ideas of Richard Stallman(whether you think
he's nuts or not) regarding how a project should be released I would not
have been able to pull this off. It is neither an obligation nor a
requirement that I contribute anything to the community. However, I feel a
debt of gratitude for the ability to code and expand upon the existing
works all while protected under the GPL.
If you truly want to donate I say it should go to the Free Software
Foundation or to Jon.

</wax off>
If you want to make a modest payment for development services rendered you
can make that payable to RWC Inc PO Box 3417 Flagstaff AZ 86003 ;)
I won't refuse it, I just don't know how to value it within the framework
I describe above since so much work has already been done by so many
others.
